My images represent obscure notions of identity, denial of individuality and artificiality.
Over a decade ago, I viewed an exhibition devoted to eroticism. After seeing this, and because of my strict Catholic upbringing, I had a light bulb moment. I realized that I had to investigate the subject matter further. Since then, I have devoted my time in the studio to creating artificial sexuality that loses the erotic nature and conveys a sense of laughter, mystery and daydream.
Throughout my day, I have an overwhelming urge to paint the many people I see, whether they come from everyday life, fashion photography or erotic movies and books. From this plethora of culled images, I begin a collage.
I then piece together from several collages and begin to draw onto the canvas. During the creation of the painting, I intuitively begin an emotional and psychological struggle to fuse these salacious images that contrast reality and distortion.
I feel the need to address my palette since it is primarily pink. It stems from a true love of the color pink and the fact that using pink is a narrative force because of its baggage.
Bubble gum, cotton candy, baby girl, Barbie dolls, carnations, frosting, flamingoes
By choosing pink, I feel that my viewer will realize these pictures are about humorous fantasy, not intellectual intimacy.
With this subject matter, I strive to find more complexity in search of the inevitable.
